Regular dental cleaning and check-ups are important in maintaining good dental health. Teeth cleaning removes the buildup of plaque and calculus (a stone like substance that attaches to your teeth). The plaque and calculus contain bacteria which can lead to gum disease and other health issues if too much accumulates. While plaque is soft and can be brushed or flossed away, calculus must be professionally removed by a dentist or dental hygienist.

Dr. Tang will recommend how often your teeth should be cleaned during your check-ups. While people with healthy teeth and gums should have their teeth cleaned every 6 months, others may have reasons to have cleanings every 3 or 4 months. Some of these factors include

  • Level of periodontal disease
  • Amount & tenacity of calculus
  • Amount of stains
  • Frequency of flossing
  • Severity of gum swelling
  • Gum recession
  • Teeth shape, position and alignment
  • Homecare adequacy
  • Type, quality & amount of dental restorations
  • Hereditary factors

This frequency interval may change as you make positive or negative changes to influence these factors. Please feel free to discuss this with Dr. Tang at your next visit.
